Mission Statement
Company Operations
The World Wide Web is the only publishing medium used by the company.
Electronic Journals Ltd. is primarily involved in providing a service for traditional publishers and scientific / technical consultants who are interested in on-line dissemination of high value-added products. We specialise in the bespoke construction of electronic journals for these clients. Our services are ideally (but by no means exclusively) suited to the publishers of high value-added scientific, medical and technical information.
We also have a number of our own consultancy and academic journals already on-line. To get an overall feel for the quality of our services, we invite you to browse through them...... . .
. .
Below we give more detailed information on the company and its general philosophy towards electronic publishing......
Alternatively you are very welcome to e-mail our journal construction specialist Dr Andy Cadman for any discussion of or enquiries concerning our services. Alternatively you can contact us at the Company address.
If you wish, one of our representatives will be willing to come and meet you at your convenience in order to fully explain why electronic publishing could benefit your company.
Registered Office and Trading Address
Electronic Journals Ltd. 218 Eastfield Road. Southsea. Portsmouth. Hampshire. PO4 9EW
U.K. registered limited company no. 3089395 (Wales).
At the present moment in time, most publishers are looking seriously at electronic publication: analysts estimate that electronic publishing may eventually reduce publishing costs by as much as 70%. Everyone now accepts that a revolution is going to occur. However, along with the perceived benefits there is also a certain amount of trepidation: what is the market for electronic versions of your journals likely to be in the near future, what kind of on-line subscription and sales system will best suite your needs, and how much will it all cost?
Our pilot study program is designed to help you answer these questions with minimal cost outlay.
At Electronic Journals Ltd. we are convinced that we are on the edge of a huge boom in commercial on-line publishing. Therefore, we are willing to let prospective clients use our software for for a trial three month period. Our pilot study scheme works like this:
1. We set up a copy of our software on our site for your own company (see our journal Electronic Geology to test how it works and to download FREE scientific information). This takes about day to complete and will remain on our site and be uncharged for a three month period.
2. We set up passwords and usernames for some or all of your existing subscribers (we will charge a small fee for the inputting of more than 50 subscribers into our database).
3. You give us the documents (in HTML and / or PDF) you wish to be placed on-line. Contact us to discuss the charging structure you prefer. Our only charge for this service is the costs incurred to us in server rental space for storing your documents (i.e. about £5 (c. $7) per Mb of information per month). All information will be treated with complete confidentiality.
4. You advertise the existence of this service and put a link to our site on your own web pages.
5. We e-mail to you weekly copies of your login and sales data so that you can judge for yourself the demand for your on-line material.
We are confident that after three months that you will want to continue to use our software for publishing commercial electronic documents. At this point, rather than locking you into an expensive long term contract you can license our software on a rolling monthly basis so that you can continue to "test the water". We can dovetail pilot studies with any of our other services listed below. Our full services are extremely competitively priced, and will probably cost less and be a more effective indicator than expensive and time consuming market research.
You can cancel licensing the software at any time. If you decide the exercise has been successful, then price reductions are offered on longer term licensing contracts. Below we give full details of our journal construction and software licensing services. Alternatively, we are always willing to hear your own ideas and requirements.
Electronic journal construction & software licensing
Our specially commissioned ELECTRA software uniquely allows the publication of individually priced articles in either PDF or HTML format. ELECTRA is available for non-exclusive license, either as a complete package or in component parts. Its features are:-
1. An abstract of any on-line article or issue within the electronic journal can be found by all visitors to the journal web pages using a database searchable by date, keyword or title. Abstract titles can also be alphabetically listed.
2. Subscription is both flexible and secure: subscribers can subscribe however much they want by credit card using an encrypted form on our US server, whereupon they are given a unique username and password. The subscribers account is locked from use until it is made active by the software licensee.
3. Once an suitable article has been found, by keying in the stated reference name, their username and password subscribers can download the fully formatted article to their machine. Several fail-safe checks are made to ensure that subscribers do not download unwanted material by mistake.
4. When a subscriber downloads an article, his account is immediately debited by the price set for that article by the licensee. (The software will not allow an article to be downloaded unless the username and password are both correctly entered and sufficient funds reside in the account.)
5. All activities (including each individual sale) are monitored by the software and are logged in a daily file which remains on the server until actively deleted by the licensee.
Legal Framework
In addition, we have enlisted copyright lawyers to write extensive legal terms and conditions of subscription especially for this software. (Most Internet firms and web sites have minimal or non-existent legal protection; a major concern for the publishers of high value-added information.)
Web design
Our designers have great experience in web design, having constructed the pages for all the academic and corporate consultancy journals currently using our software. We use industry standard packages such as Adobe Photoshop and Aldus Freehand. Please see our web pages for our design styles. If required, we can also scan in hardcopy text and colour diagrams and incorporate this information into web documents. See our design page for further details.........
Desk Top Publishing
Using industry standard software Adobe Pagemaker we can desk top publish your articles to the highest standard and place them on-line as PDF files (and/or convert them to the Web language HTML).
Web site construction
As part of our integrated service, we will arrange for the setting up and renting of web server space if your company has yet to acquire an Internet presence. We will also arrange for the registration of your own domain name and the advertising of your site on the Internet (e.g. by directory listing or bulk e-mail) if required.
Consultancy
We can offer consultancy on what our experience has taught us about the creation and marketing of electronic journals and the rapidly developing world of Internet commerce.
